What Are Your Favorite Money Saving Grocery Ideas?
I am looking for ways to cut down on my grocery bill. I already don’t shop when I am hungry, take a list and manage to stay close to it, and buy some things in bulk. Any new ideas for saving money, including thrifty recipes, would be great!
How about dropping a “brand level” and see if you notice the difference. A lot of people buy “basics” or “value” brands for stuff like chopped tomatoes and stuff.
Make sure you use up all your leftovers – make a nice hearty soup on a Sunday and you have at least 2 lunches there.
If you shop online always view all offers before you buy anything – if you can get 2 lots of washing powder for the price of one, why be brand loyal
Definitely try to buy you veg and fruit at a local market or green grocer – they are so much cheaper than the supermarket and usually you can buy the exat quantity that you need.
Look out for coupons and discount vouchers for stuff that you actually need – if you collect them anyway try to see if people at work do the same and trade with them for ones that are more useful.
I find items on sale at the local grocery market are often less expensive then buying in bulk. I also divide and freeze items. Cheese freezes well. I also make english muffin sandwiches and freeze them to use for breakfast. It is much cheaper than stopping for a breakfast sandwich. I also take a thermos of coffee to work and try to pack a lunch. When I’m on the road, I bring a little cooler of beverages to avoid paying $1. 50 for a bottle of water.
+ Avoid buying brand names
+ Read the cost per pound or ounce – for the same product in different sizes. Sometimes you’ll find real savings here.
+ Buy seasonal fruit & vegetables
+ Need proteins in your diet. . . skip the cheap cuts of meat & eat beans.
+ Don’t shun leftovers. It’s a sin to throw away food that you can (give away or) eat again the next day.
+ Fish – sometimes the cheapest is the best. sardines are good and good for you. If you can find them fresh then even better.
+ Potatoes, bread, pasta, rice – eat only one serving of only one of these per day. You save money here and also get to loose and or maintain your weight.
+ EAT LESS! Seriously, I’m not saying not to eat but simply eating less will help us spend less at the super market.
I love stir frys, you can have them with noodles, wraps, mash, whatever! Its cheap and easy too, and also you can be so so creative with it, make it hot or cool, add salsa or mayo, black pepper, soy sauce, anything!
shopping at aldi’s can easily knock off fifty to a hundred dollars!
